Prospect Avenue Association

Information Sheet, February 2008

Milwaukee and developers are talking big change for Prospect Avenue.

  • The Department of City Development is drafting a development plan for our “Northeast Area” neighborhood.
  • The latest draft calls for new construction and possible two-way traffic on Prospect and Farwell Avenues.
  • An “overlay district” would be created to define standards for new construction and historic preservation on Prospect Avenue.
  • Meanwhile, real estate developers are talking with city officials about intensive development and high rise construction.

A new Prospect Avenue Association is being formed so that residents and owners can have a voice in our future.  The Association will

  • Serve as a conduit for ideas from Prospect Avenue residents and owners to city officials.
  • Contribute to “Northeast Area” planning for Prospect Avenue.
  • Participate in creation of an “overlay district” for Prospect Avenue.
  • Share information.
  • Build community and enhance the neighborhood.

Residents and owners have already raised concerns about the need to:

  • Retain one-way traffic.
  • Preserve the mix of affordable and affluent housing.
  • Retain the neighborhood’s historic charm, ambience, and varied architecture.
  • Require new development to be cutting-edge and neighborhood enhancing.
  • Improve pedestrian safety, including for people with disabilities.
  • Improve parking.
  • Improve traffic safety and flow.
  • Improve public transportation.
  • Build, rather than destroy, property values.
  • Preserve green space, access to the lake, and safe bicycle lanes.

In addition, residents and owners seek better and more timely information from the city about development proposals and decisions and urge open meetings.

The Prospect Avenue Association needs your ideas, participation, and support.

Please fill in the attached opinion sheet and send it to Prospect Avenue Association, Landmark on the Lake, 1660 North Prospect Avenue, Suite 411, Milwaukee, WI 53202; or give it to the Door Attendant in the 1660 lobby.  Or email your ideas and any questions to Eileen.Collins1660@sbcglobal.net.

Thanks and looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting,

Eileen Collins, PAA Recorder
